There’s this tree. Or shrub. Something. Surely it has a real name. It looks like it belongs in the desert. It’s got these dark green spiky leaves that grow in a ball. From within the center of this ball shoot up slender wands topped off with cream colored flowers. The flowers look like they’d smell like floral butter. There are rows and rows of them outside my office. Right now they’re growing out grass that looks dirty hair. Dull brownish green and lank. The contrast between the dark (almost olive) green of the plants’ leaves and the grass is startling.

Today I noticed on the way back into the office from lunch that some of the petals have fallen. They’ve impaled themselves on the sharp looking leaves. I think the grass is winning.
