Just got in from internship. Wheee! People are nasty. That’s all I gotta say. I had the two worst clients of my short career today. Just sayin.

Hygeine, Your Friend and Mine

The eye docs called; the glasses are in!!! Yay!

I took the Girlie up to the optometrist last week. I knew that her vision needed to be checked out.

Here’s the scoop:

The ‘kins is “hideously farsighted” (the doc’s words, not mine). She *can* be corrected up to 20/40 however; what’s more – when her vision is corrected her drifting eye/focus comes to dead zero. Which means that she won’t have to have surgery. This was a very real fear as both of her eyes (more pronounced in the left) drifted when she got tired.
Further, the doctor also confirmed that the reason she is having such trouble with letter and number recognition is because she can’t see them. Its hard to know what a letter/number is if all you can see is fuzz. *sigh!* I was starting to get a bit worried by her persistent lack of interest in reading. She likes being read to – she just can’t focus long enough on the letters without her head/eyes hurting. Being able to see without pain is going to make all the difference in her study habits. This is FABU news as she is starting school in August. Getting her glasses now will mean that she will be used to wearing them by the time school starts. That’s the theory at any rate.

A friend o’mine, vulpine137, has been doing your challenge for awhile now. (At least, every time I turn around he’s posted a list of books and a link to this community.) I am a somewhat voracious reader (generally speaking) so I thought I’d hop on the bandwagon. I’ll just post what I’ve read so far and catch up as I go along. 🙂

 

1. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Douglas Adams
** Very good read, very Douglas Adams. Lots of twisty dialogue that _seems_ to make no sense, and then suddenly it does.

2. The Long, Dark Teatime of the Soul , Douglas Adams
** Not quite as good as the first of the Dirk Gently books. The ending was a bit anticlimatic for me.

3. Hangman’s Root, Susan Wittig Albert
4. Rosemary Remembered, Susan Wittig Albert
5. Thyme of Death, Susan Wittig Albert
6. Lavender Lies, Susan Wittig Albert
**These are part of a series of murder mysteries set in the fictional town of Pecan Springs, Texas (think of a cross between Wimberly and San Marcos and you’ve got it). The heroine of the books is China Bayles, ex-lawyer turned herb shop owner. I like all the herbal knowledge and the books are very much character driven. Mare sez “Check ’em out if you have a weakness for women’s murder mysteries!”

7. Green Rider, Kristen Britain
8. First Rider’s Call, Kristen Britain
**First couple in a series. I like them very much. The magic in the books is understated and the characters are believable. The main heroine (Karigan G’ladheon) is very human.

9. Sabriel, Garth Nix
** Necromancers with bells. Young adult fiction, well written.

10. By The Light of The Moon, Dean Koontz
** I love Koontz, even if all of his characters are basically the same folks recycled over and over.
This particular book also plays into my love of superheroes.

11. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Steven King
** I have NO idea how King pulled off writing as a young (9 year old) girl – but he did and beautifully. This is a VERY good book and not all in his usual style.

12. The Burning Times, Jeanne Kalogridis
** This should be on the reading list of all Wiccans. A superb “might have been” type of book.

13. A Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin
15. A Clash of Kings, George R.R. Martin
** First two of the Song of Ice and Fire series. My only comment is YOU MUST READ THESE if you are at all into SF/Fantasy. These blow the competition out of the water.

16. Shadow Moon, Chris Claremont & George Lucas
17. Shadow Dawn, Chris Claremont & George Lucas
18. Shadow Star, Chris Claremont & George Lucas
** These stories picked up where “Willow” (remember that movie? Madmartigan? Sorcha? and “You’re all pigs!!!” Yeah, *that* one!) left off. I loved these and they are definitely on the recommend list. But not on the “loan out” list. 😉

19. The Davinci Code, Dan Brown
** Murder mystery, action book, iconagraphers, secret societies.

20. Black House, Stephen King & Peter Straub
** Sequel to the Talisman (like nearly 20 years later guys!). Well written with some spectacular “boo!” moments. It ended about like I thought it would but is otherwise very good. I’m just miffed that one of the bikers get whacked. Grr.

That’s where I’m at so far. 🙂
